How to Use the Bill Split Calculator
Enter the total bill amount, select a tip percentage, and choose how you want to split. The calculator gives you two modes for maximum flexibility:
- Equal Split divides the bill plus tip evenly among all people. Just set the number of people and you are done.
- Custom Split lets you assign different amounts to each person. Enter each person's name and their share of the bill as a dollar amount or percentage. The tip is distributed proportionally.
- Quick tip buttons let you select common tip percentages (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%) with one tap, or use Custom for any percentage.
- Round up rounds each person's amount up to the nearest cent so the math works out cleanly.
- Copy Result copies a formatted breakdown to your clipboard for easy sharing via text or chat.
How Bill Splitting Works
Splitting a bill involves two steps: calculating the tip and dividing the total among the group. The standard formula is:
Tip = Bill Amount x (Tip Percentage / 100) Total = Bill Amount + Tip Per Person = Total / Number of People
For example, a $120 dinner with an 18% tip: $120 x 0.18 = $21.60 tip. The total is $141.60. Split four ways, each person pays $35.40.
When splitting by custom amounts, the tip is distributed proportionally to each person's share. If one person ordered $40 worth and another ordered $80, the second person pays twice the tip amount of the first.
Tips for Splitting Bills
- Decide before ordering. Agree on how you will split the bill before the food arrives to avoid awkward conversations later.
- Ask the server to split the check. Many restaurants can run separate cards, which is the simplest approach for the group.
- Use the same tip percentage. Whether splitting evenly or by custom amounts, everyone should agree on the same tip rate.
- Account for shared items. Appetizers, bottles of wine, and shared dishes should be split evenly among those who partook.
- Round up slightly. Rounding up each person's share by a small amount avoids leaving the last person to cover rounding gaps.
- Venmo or send the breakdown. Use the Copy Result button to share the per-person amounts so everyone knows exactly what they owe.
