How to Calculate a Tip
The formula for calculating a tip is straightforward:
Tip = Bill Amount x (Tip Percentage / 100) Total = Bill Amount + Tip Per Person = Total / Number of People
For example, on a $85.00 bill with an 18% tip: $85.00 x 0.18 = $15.30 tip. The total is $100.30. If you split it between 3 people, each person pays $33.43.
Quick mental math tricks
- 10% tip: Move the decimal point one place left. $85 becomes $8.50.
- 15% tip: Find 10%, then add half of that. $8.50 + $4.25 = $12.75.
- 20% tip: Find 10% and double it. $8.50 x 2 = $17.00.
- 25% tip: Find 10%, double it, then add half again. Or just divide the bill by 4.
